Shiatsu/acupressure

Shiatsu and acupressure are forms of eastern massage. The terms are virtually interchangeable, both access the same energy system as acupuncture but with physical pressure and not needles.

The word Shiatsu means finger pressure which is the main technique for applying massage but hands, elbows, knees, feet and forearms are also used. Stretching exercises are also incorporated to increase flexibility.

Energy

Shiatsu accesses the flow of Ki (life energy) which permeates ever part of the body, keeping every bodily function alive. The more Ki that reaches the cells of the body the less prone they are to decay. The more abundantly and smoothly Ki flows throughout the body the healthier the individual. Many health problems are alleviated by promoting a steady and unimpeded flow of Ki, and re-balancing it where it is deficient or excessive.

Ki aggregates in the body along channels termed meridians which flow across the surface and into the interior to the organs. The surface flow of the meridians offers easy access and acupressure points (tsubos), are often targeted to intensify the massage, because they are the gateways where the energy opens on to the surface.

As long as Ki flows evenly the individual stays healthy. If it becomes stuck or the flow is exacerbated without re-balancing itself dis-ease is experienced.

The role of Shiatsu today

Shiatsu can be effective in remedying problems that western medicine can do little for. With its basis in oriental medicine, shiatsu has the means to understand how imbalances in energy flow creates problems such as back pain, headaches, migraines, chronic muscle tension, menstrual cycle irregularities, painful periods, low vitality and negative moods like depression, anxiety and worry,. (which are traditionally treated with pain-killers or anti-depressants) and alleviate them.

Besides treating a client manually a practitioner can give advice on self help, such as diet, exercise routine and change of life style.

General

Although shiatsu can be used for specific health problems, over a number of treatments, improved sleeping patterns, calmer feelings, deeper centering and loss of old aches and pains are experienced as general benefits.

Shiatsu promotes overall health of the body, strengthens the immune system, balances body mind and spirit and acts as a preventative tool against illness.
